The Dangers of Unguarded Skylights

April 14, 2015- A man cleaning a roof at a Fort Myers Beach marina died from injuries he received after he fell through a Fiberglas panel Tuesday.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Danny Balensiefer, 52, of Fort Myers, an employee at the marina, had been powerwashing a large building when he broke through the light panel and fell face-down into the building shortly before 1 p.m..

He was taken to Health Park Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s report said a coworker, Cody Clipperton, 20, was walking out of the building when he heard a crash and saw Balensiefer fall.

The owner of the marina, George Freeland, told the sheriff’s office that Balensiefer had been cleaning the roof on a large steel building and was on the southeast corner when he fell through a Fiberglas light panel.

People in the area told WINK, our news partner, they saw a pressure washer, a crane and a hole in the roof within the crime scene.

The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office, the Lee County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
